The District has a rich cultural history, including the Go-Go scene, punk rock, the Washington Color School and other artistic movements, which flourished at a time when D.C. was thought of as a government town. As the city continues to grow, can artists still find a welcoming home in D.C.? How can the city continue to foster these creative movements? District of Change is an ongoing conversation series examining the transformation of the District of Columbia.
Hosted by Matthew Yglesias, former Slate correspondent and current executive editor of Vox Media, panelists and the audience talked about how the District’s art scene has changed over the last 30 years.
Holly Bass: multidisciplinary performance and visual artist, as well as writer and director
Brendan Canty: D.C. musician, composer, producer, filmmaker, and former Fugazi drummer
Victoria Reis: Co-Founder and Executive & Artistic Director for Transformer D.C., a nonprofit that supports and promotes local artists
